How this journey began, and where it has come from
THE STORY BEHIND ONE HEART
One Heart did not begin as a programme. It emerged from a growing awareness —
that while much has been done in our nation, something deeper is still needed.
South Africa carries a powerful history of prayer. Moments of unity, reconciliation, and transformation have often been rooted in people gathering in the presence of God.
Yet over time, we have also seen:

increasing division
-
frustration among younger generations
-
a growing distance between faith and everyday life
This raised a deeper question:
What if the issue is not only what we are doing —
but how we are being formed?
One Heart is a response to that question.
A JOURNEY SHAPED BY OUR NATION
This journey is rooted in the story of South Africa.
As we reflect on moments like Youth Day,
we remember both:
-
deep pain
-
and courageous voices
These moments remind us that formation matters.
If we are not formed in the presence of God,
we are formed elsewhere — by fear, anger, or division.
One Heart is not about revisiting the past.
It is about allowing God to form a new way of living —
one rooted in belonging, prayer, and shared life.
FROM UNITY TO ONENESS
In the past, much of our language has been about unity.
But Jesus did not pray for unity.
He prayed for oneness.
Unity can be something we try to build.
Oneness is something we are invited to return to — because it is already true in Christ.
This shift changes everything:

from effort → identity
-
from behaviour → belonging
-
from agreement → shared life
One Heart grows out of this conviction.
PREVIOUS ONE HEART JOURNEYS
Over time, One Heart has taken different forms.
Earlier journeys have:

brought people together across communities
-
invited reflection on reconciliation and shared life
-
created spaces for prayer, listening, and connection
These expressions helped shape what this journey has now become.
They are not replaced — they are part of the story.

Stories of Reconciliation
As part of the One Heart journey we decided to capture stories of reconciliation both in South Africa and in other contexts where reconciliation doesn't make sense (but for Jesus). These have been captured in podcast format in partnership with The Follower Podcast between June and August 2024 and Season 2 of this series from the 9th June 2025. Sounds of Reconciliation
An album of lament born out of a reconciliation journey by a South African group We Will Worship. They are a ministry and non profit organisation based in Johannesburg, South Africa labouring to see a generation of Africans worship YAHWEH not only in song but in thought, word and deed.
The song May We Be One​ by artist AC Lee, produced by @jaronmicahmusic and co-written by @lyddron and @alina.kamilchu
This song was written at a retreat where they were stirred for unity within the body of Christ across the world. It is to be sung to yourself when you’re feeling the divide and for the body when you need a common prayer.
HOW THIS CONNECTS TO NOW
The current One Heart journey builds on everything that has come before — but takes a simpler, more formational approach.

THE HEART BEHIND ONE HEART
The ‘Genadendal Pilgrimage of Grace’ was led by SACLI Reconcile in September 2022 in the town of Genadendal, Western Cape, South Africa. The purpose of this pilgrimage was Repentance, Reconciliation, Restoration and Prayer. Deep repentance from the Dutch Reformed (the oldest congregation in South Africa) to the Moravian church (the second oldest congregation in South Africa) took place.
This pilgrimage was born out of more than 20 years of intentional prayer for the unity of John 17 over South Africa. It’s been three years and we are still journeying together because real reconciliation only comes through relationship and learning to love one another. The desire is for others to experience the wonder of building intentional relationships across historical dividing lines and for healing to flow from this. And that is how the One Heart guide was birthed.
